What does it mean to share the label “exile”, while facing very different opportunities and barriers, both largely depending on your country of origin?

This edition of “Exile Talks” explores the different layers of realities of exile in Germany. The discussion focuses on the challenges exiled journalists and human rights defenders encounter when navigating the German migration system and interacting with with German human rights organisations and the media landscape. We will examine how social inequalities, structural racism, and other discriminatory policies shape access to society, covering topics such as visas, work permits, employment, cooperation opportunities, institutional support and protection from transnational repression.

Speakers:
Hanan Badr is Full Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg, where she heads the division Public Spheres and Inequalities. Her research focuses on global inclusivity and inequalities, and she is the first Arab professor in communication studies in the German-speaking countries.

Nazeeha Saeed is a Bahraini journalist and trainer based in Germany, focusing on human rights, politics and gender. Forced to leave Bahrain because of her independent journalism, she continues to advocate for freedom of expression and human rights and has received several international awards.

Roro S. Getu is an Ethiopian human rights defender, former prisoner of conscience and recipient of the 2024 Schuman EU Award. He holds an LLM in Human Rights Law and has extensive experience in human rights monitoring, reporting and advocacy, and has lived in Hamburg since February 2025.
